Similar to the pleural mesothelioma, the malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is also caused by the excessive inhalation or exposure of hazardous asbestos. Even though the asbestos fiber tends to grow as a cancer in the lining of the lungs, most cases also show that some people got affected in their peritoneal. Somehow the hazardous asbestos got captured in the lining of the lungs cavity, called peritoneal, hence that is why the second common of the disease is called malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Regardless of how the fibers reach and get stuck in the peritoneal, it causes the inflammation, and if it get worse, eventually it will form a tumor in the peritoneal area.

Like all form of asbestos-caused disease, the malignant peritoneal mesothelioma can be diagnosed after more or less five decades and stay mysteriously in the peritoneal until it is found.
